International Women's Day: Equality in organizations
“The test to determine whether or not you can do a job shouldn’t be the arrangement of your chromosomes” (Bella Abzug). The sex we are born with shouldn’t determine the course of our lives; it should allow us to live them on equal terms.
March 8th, International Women’s Day, advocates for and defends gender equality in the workplace, among other areas.
The goal is to pursue equal rights, opportunities, and possibilities for all people, regardless of their gender or other biological characteristics.
In a world increasingly aware of diversity and inclusion, organizations play a crucial role in promoting gender equality.
Equality plans are fundamental tools for achieving this goal. In this article, we will explore what equality plans are, why they are necessary, and how they are implemented in companies.
Equality Plan
An equality plan is a set of measures designed to guarantee equal treatment and opportunities for women and men within an organization.
These plans aim to eliminate discrimination based on sex and foster an equitable work environment. Some key aspects of equality plans include:
1. Situation Analysis: Before implementing an equality plan, it is essential to understand the organization’s current situation in terms of equality. This involves analyzing data, identifying gaps, and evaluating existing practices.
2. Concrete Measures: Equality plans contain specific actions to address inequalities. These may include:
- Equal Pay: Ensuring that men and women receive fair wages for equal work.
- Promotion and Professional Development: Fostering growth opportunities for all employees, regardless of gender.
- Work-Life Balance: Facilitating harmony between work and personal life.
- Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination: Establishing clear policies and procedures to prevent situations of harassment or discrimination.
Promoting Equality in ARENA
Developing and implementing an equality plan strengthens our culture, and at ARENA, we actively join the global commitment to promoting gender equality, reflected in our efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5).
To achieve this goal, we carry out several initiatives within our organization. These include promoting gender equality training, adopting inclusive recruitment practices, and developing specific plans to guarantee equal pay and foster professional growth.
Developing training and awareness programs is fundamental to promoting equality in the workplace. Some of the reasons that underscore the importance of this training include:
- It helps employees understand the importance of equal treatment and opportunities.
- It trains staff in selection and recruitment to avoid potential discrimination based on sex.
- It empowers employees to recognize gender bias and discriminatory behavior.
Talent acquisition is also considered a key aspect of ensuring non-discrimination based on gender in organizations. At ARENA, we base our recruitment and selection processes on objectivity and equal opportunities.
Our Code of Ethics and Conduct, as well as our Protocol for the Prevention of Harassment, establish these guidelines, which, aligned with our principles and values, ensure that we treat the onboarding of professionals to the company with complete fairness.
Professional development is crucial for career growth, but the “glass ceiling” represents invisible barriers for women that prevent their advancement.
Equal professional development creates a fair work environment and promotes the growth of all employees.
At ARENA, 4 out of 7 managers are women, with significant involvement in decision-making.
We at ARENA are committed to this cause, and together we are achieving an equal work environment, enriching perspectives and creativity within the organization.
